As described above in the section on hydrothermal vents, a tubeworm has chemosynthetic bacteria that live in its body and supply the tubeworm with its only source of food. Further research has shown that the tubeworms provide the bacteria with nitrate. Bacteria need the nitrate in order to produce amino acids, which are then shared with the tubeworm.
