Why do dogs cry when you leave the house?

When go grab my keys and start to put on my backpack my dog starts to whine and bark. How does he know that I'm leaving the house before I have even stepped foot outside the door? Sometimes I leave my keys near the door, so I can leave the house without making the noise of picking up my keys, but he still seems to know I'm leaving the house. It hurts my heart when I hear him crying as I close the door and walk away.

Is this separation anxiety but we got him as a puppy so he didn't really have a traumatized experience before we adopted him. We try many things to get him to feel less anxious when we leave the house.
