After the Fall of Constantinople, European powers began looking for alternative routes to Asia. What I'm wondering is why did Constantinople close off its land routes to the European powers instead of leaving the trade routes open and maintaining the lucrative trade. That would be the logical next step to me since Constantinople was such a melting pot in that period.
