Beyond what techniques and tools of filmmaking APOCALYPSE NOW uses (as you will be talking about in your short answer) what did you think of the film? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!
While not exactly a "new" film, as it's from 1979, it is far more modern than some of the far older films we have been looking at. One of the things that strikes me is that these days, long-form story arcs are very popular on series TV, whatever you are binge-watching on HBO, Netflix or whatever this month. Television, however, is very much a writers medium, and many of these shows are extremely dialogue driven. By contrast, it seems to me that APOCALYPSE NOW is very much about telling a story visually. with long sections without dialogue.
Another thing I noticed looking at it again is the sheer scale of the film -- there are no digital effects here, the explosions, helicopters and jets are real, and the filmmakers and cast are actually out there in the middle of the Philippine jungle with a cast of hundreds and all this money blowing up bridges far from civilization -- which as Coppola notes in the HEARTS OF DARKNESS trailer, made it sort of like the American experience in Vietnam.Beyond what techniques and tools of filmmaking APOCALYPSE NOW uses (as you will be talking about in your short answer) what did you think of the film?
