To complete this learning activity, you will need permission to observe a child, preferably one between 1 and 6 years of age. In most child care centres, schools, etc., parents have already given permission for their child to be observed. However, if you are observing a child in another setting, you will need to have the parent(s) or guardian(s) sign the permission form that is in the Appendix at the end of Unit One. Choose the child carefully; you will be observing the same child for a number of learning activities/assignments throughout the course. Using the running record format, complete a 10-15 minute observation of the child at play. Be sure to include as much objective detail as possible. After completing the observation and any inferences you have made:

Write a summary of what you observed. You are not required to write an action plan.

Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this format.
