Steam enters the first turbine stage of a Rankine power plant with reheat and regeneration at 1800 psi, 1000 *F and expands in five turbine stages to a condenser pressure of 1 psi. The reheat is at 100 psi back up to 1000 *F. The cycle includes three feedwater heaters. The closed feedwater heaters operate at 600 psi and 160 psi respectively, with the drains from each trapped into the next lower pressure feedwater heater. The feedwater leaving each closed feedwater heater is at the saturation temperature corresponding to the extraction pressure. The open feedwater heater operates at 20 psi. The pumps operate isentropically and each turbine stages has an isentropic efficiency of 88. Sketch the layout of the cycle and number the principal state points. Write the mass balance solving symbolically for the respective mass fraction (y's) for each of the feedwater heaters. Find the thermal efficiency of the cycle solving explicitly for all the works and Q's along the way.
