Unit 1 Individual Project - Higher National Certificate in Construction & the Built Environment
Project - The Potential for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) To Transform the Industry
A written report on any of the suggested areas/topics:
1. The implications of MMC for sustainability (Building Services Engineering)
2. The potential of MMC to address the supply of buildings and reduce shortages (Construction)
3. Better Building Reliability through MMC (Civil Engineering)
4. Cost Control Through MMC. (Surveying)
You will need to select a topic depending on your discipline and produce:
• A brief that will outline the solutions and requirements of the project topic
• A plan which will outline the management of the project within agreed timescales and in accordance with the specification.
• An evaluation of the project management solution and how best to proceed with the project
• A report and PowerPoint presentation for your completed project outcomes.
The recommended word limit is 4000 - 6000 words. You will not be penalised for exceeding the total word limit up to 10%; being concise and clear are key features of professional documents.
Learning Outcome 1: Formulate a project that will provide a solution to an identified problem
Learning Outcome 2: Manage a project within agreed timescales and specification, documenting the process throughout
Learning Outcome 3: Evaluate potential project management solutions
Learning Outcome 4: Produce a project report and deliver a presentation of the final project outcomes
Assignment Brief
Scenario - Case Study
You are hired by a company which has won a multidisciplinary contract (civil engineering, surveying, building services engineering and construction) for the design of a 3-storey university college building dedicated to construction and the built environment. Your firm is a group of professionals in civil and building services engineering design, construction, and procurement. You are part of the design team required to offer a modern method of construction solution which considers satisfying both the industry sustainability requirements and client's functional needs.
The client has acquired a brownfield site adjacent to the Vauxhall Road Campus, to expand and produce a state-of-the-artconstruction and built environment department. This land is situated between Blackstock Street and Paul Street (site plan attached). In offering a modern method of construction solution, you are to concentrate on your area / discipline considering:
• Project Targets
• High BREEAM rating
• Optimised human comfort in line with functionality
• Minimise cost / material storage / supply chain etc
• Incorporating BIM in building design
You are required to prepare and present reports on the potential for modern methods of construction to transform the industry under the suggested topics and as relevant from your discipline point of view. Hence, you shall consider key issues such benefits of offsite manufacturing, industry sustainability needs, BREEAM, cost effectiveness, social views of MMCs, etc. You should show a clear understanding of building information modelling (BIM), modern methods of constructionand how they satisfy the industry's sustainability requirements. You should start by considering the different types of modern methods of construction available in the market and how they affect your area / discipline and produce a report and a presentation to inform the client on the methods to select and their benefits. Your report shall proffer solution(s) to the client to make materials choices and to manage the risks associated with the building, engineering or construction materials selected for use on the elements (floors, services, cladding, etc.), especially, considering recent incidents in the UK construction industry.
Your report should include:
• An overview of the overall building project and the selection of materials considering their risks.
• Evidence of the properties engineering, and construction materials employed in specific discipline of construction and built practice.
• An evaluation of the risks associated with the specification of materials for building elements design and construction.
Assignment Brief
You are required to produce a detailed report advising the Client on how modern methods of construction and their benefits. The issues of sustainability, costs, buildability and building reliability should be explored critically (depending on your area of specialisation or discipline in the design team). The Client, being inexperienced, requires input on modern methods of construction that are sustainable, cost effective, reliable and attain high BREEAM ratings.
You will need read up on the different types of modern methods of construction looking at how they meet the industry's sustainability requirements.
You shall ensure that all material derived from ‘other' sources is appropriately referenced using the Harvard style Referencing. The recommended word count for this section of the submission is between 4,000 and 6,000 words. Whilst there is no upper word limit for this submission, please recognise the importance of producing a concise, professional standard report.
Please note: It is fundamental that you undertake a detailed review of the grading criteria and all associated Unit 1 information. The review will make you aware of the depth of knowledge you must demonstrate within your submission.
