At the highpoint of what we call "The Enlightenment" Kant wrote this essay to encourage us to think for ourselves. He implies that it is just laziness and fear that keep us from thinking for ourselves. Later thinkers have pointed out it is more complicated than that, and that human beings are smart because we can benefit from each other's thinking - like in science, news gathering, going to university, etc. Maybe Kant is sorta right and sorta wrong.
