A shaft is supported in ball bearings at A and E and loaded by a nonrotating force of 10 kN at the mid-span, C. All dimensions including the diameters of the shafts are in mm. Assume that the shaft has the ultimate tensile strength Sut = 550 N/mm2 and the endurance limit Se' = 0.5×Sut. The fraction, f, of Sut is 0.8. The stress concentration factor Kt = 1.72 and the notch sensitivity factor q=0.9. The modification factors of surface and size are ka = 0.85 and kb=0.84 respectively. First, determine whether the shaft will survive for finite life or infinite life. Also, estimate the life of the shaft.
