Baby M was born 24 hours ago at 38 weeks gestation via a repeat cesarean birth. Apgar were 8 at 1 minute and 9 at 5 minutes. Weight is 7 lbs. 10 oz. The postpartum patient is now a 29-year-old G2 P2-0-0-2 and a recent Cuban immigrant. Baby M has been breastfeeding, but patient wants to supplement with formula as they feel they are not making enough milk yet for the baby. Patient is concerned because the baby has raised white spots on their nose; hands and feet are bluish in color at times; and there is bruising on the baby's buttocks. Patient is frustrated because they cannot get into a comfortable position for breastfeeding due to the pain from the cesarean incision and the uterine contractions that happen when breastfeeding.
1. What affect might supplementing with formula have on the breastfeeding
2. How might the nurse respond to the patient regarding the request for supplementing?
3. What positions and supports might the nurse suggest to the patient to make it more comfortable while breastfeeding? Name at least 3.
