CASE STUDY
A new child has joined your preschool room at the childcare centre where you work as an ECE. The parents have told the supervisor about their child's depression. The parents are concerned about how the child will be treated by other people and how the childcare staff and programming can meet the child's needs. The supervisor has advised the staff of the child's depression and they are working together to create a plan of action which will meet the unique needs of the child and ensure an inclusive program is maintained.
In your report, answer the following questions as the ECE in the room. Please make reference to your group's research on the condition, the CCEYA, textbooks, ELECT, How Does Learning Happen and Code of Ethics in your answers to support your ideas.please answer the each question separately .
In thinking about health, what steps and/or precautions would you take at your centre to support, care for and include this child in the program? (ie. Medications, illness, doctor visits, additional care required, physical health, mental health, dental health, sleep and rest, physical activity, toileting, sanitizing etc). Why?
In thinking about about safety, what steps and/or precautions would you take at your centre to support, care for and include this child in the program? (ie. Playground safety, classroom materials, ratios, supervision, equipment, etc). Why?
In thinking about about nutrition, what steps and/or precautions would you take at your centre to support, care for and include this child in the program? (Diet, alternative meals, portions, serving & preparation of foods, food guide, eating environment, allergies, food restrictions, choking hazards, etc). Why?
How could this affect the schedule or routines at your centre? How would you change or modify any of the routines or schedules to meet the child's needs? (Think about the schedules we looked at and talked about in class - what needs to be considered for this child?). Why?
How would you deal with the issues of confidentiality? What can you do or not do? Who can you share information with? What type of information can you share? Why? (ie. Other families, staff, children, outside agencies or support staff coming in to the centre)
In your role as a community resource and family support, how could you further support the family of the child? (ie. Types of interactions, attitudes towards family, extra support at centre, outside agencies/resources for both child and parents)
How can you ensure an inclusive/bias-free environment is being provided for this child/class/family? (classroom materials, interactions, philosophy, policies and procedures, atmosphere, language used, visual supports, furniture and equipment, room set up, etc.)
How could observations of the child be helpful in this situation.
