Content of your review:
The first half of the paper (approx. 1.5 pages) is a summary of the book You will discuss the subject of the book (such as Euclid or Sappho). Describe who the person was. Identify/summarize the person's accomplishments throughout their life that made him/her noteworthy. Include a discussion of why the life was important (in the author's opinion) Add any early experiences, personal tragedy, unforeseen circumstances, or other salient information to provide a complete life picture.
The second half of the paper (1.5 pages) is a critique. You will describe what you, the reader, thought of the book. Did you like it, or did not like it? Explain why you came to that conclusion. You might comment on the length, level of detail of information provided, author's writing style, use of illustrations and usefulness of them, ease of understanding the information provided, etc.
Consider giving your book a grade (A-F) or a score (0-10) - some students have found it useful to do this. It helps to add length to the 2nd half of your paper and allows you to explain the rationale for the grade or score you assigned.
Your paper should include the following:
Introduction: In the first paragraph, the paper identifies the purpose of the paper
In the next several paragraphs the student provides a summary of the book.
Then, the student provides a critique in the next several paragraphs
Conclusion: In the final paragraph write a thoughtful summary of the points you have made.
Again - Consider giving the book a grade (A-F) based on length, readability, or any other criteria you specify.
