The read-write head in a disk drive of a digital computer should float at a constant but small height (say, a fraction of a μm) above the disk surface. Because of the aerodynamics resulting from the surface roughness and the surface deformations of the disk, the head can be excited into vibrations that could cause head-disk contacts. These contacts, which are called head-disk interferences (HDIs), are clearly undesirable. They can occur at very high frequencies (say, 1 MHz). The purpose of a glide test is to detect HDIs and to determine the nature of these interferences. Glide testing can be used to determine the effect of parameters such as the flying height of the head and the speed of the disk and to qualify (certify the quality of) disk drive units. Indicate the basic instrumentation needed in glide testing. In particular, suggest the types of sensors that could be used and their advantages and disadvantages
You are a thermal design engineer and plan to design cooling solution for computer chip. As a basic design, a chip (kc = 50 W/m-K) is mounted in a dielectric substrate (ks = 5.0 W/m-K) and one surface of the system is convectively cooled, while the r..

Find the impulse response h[n] for each of the causal LTI discrete-time systems satisfying the following difference equations and indicate whether each system is a FIR or an IIR system.
Argon gas initially at 140 kPa, 10C is contained in a cylinder fitted with a piston. The initial volume of the gas is 0.2m^3. The gas is now compressed in a poly tropic process, PV^(1.4)=constant, to a final pressure of 700 kPa assuming ideal gas beh..

A radiator wall measuring 2 m by 3 m (WxH) is held a temperature of 125 °C. Straight aluminum fins (k = 175 W/mK) are to be mounted on the wall. The fins are 5 cm in length and 0.8 mm thick. The system is allowed to convectively transfer heat to ambi..
Air at 127°C flows over the plate with a heat transfer convection coefficient of 15 W/m2 · K. Determine the emissivity, absorptivity, and radiosity of the plate. What is the net heat transfer rate per unit area?
A model of an airplane is to be tested at 20°C in a wind tunnel. The model is built to 1/12th scale. In order to match both the Mach number and the Reynolds number of the plane, the wind tunnel is pressurized. To what pressure (in atm) should the air..
Ask one or two engineers what kinds of oral presentations they make on a fairly regular basis. How long do they talk each time? What do they talk about? Who is their audience? Do they use any graphic aids or handouts while presenting? What kinds of f..
