Bobby, who is 10 years old, was referred to therapy by his school because he is exhibiting difficulties in the classroom. His mother and stepfather attend the initial therapy session without Bobby in order for the therapist to do an intake session, to sign all of the necessary documents, and to get a history of the problem. They said that Bobby's teacher says that he is not trying hard enough, he does not pay attention, he does not follow directions, and he does not play with the other children at recess. The stepfather says that part of the problem is that the mother does not discipline Bobby enough and that she is over-protective. He also says that the child's biological father is lenient with Bobby and he lets him get away with too much. The mother says very little in the session, although the stepfather is very vocal.
The therapist meets Bobby on the second session. When the therapist talks to him, he seems lethargic, but cooperative. He says that school is okay. He visits his biological father every weekend and he says that he likes to go there because he lets him do whatever he wants to do. Bobby further states that he really does not like his stepfather.
