Although legal punishment serves as a formal method of social control, it is not the sole influence on human behavior. A stronger influence typically comes from informal social controls such as cultural norms, peer expectations, and one's personal values. Most people go based off of their belief on right or wrong and how something feels. This typically comes from your personal experiences and the wisdom you've gained along the way as well as family and spirituality having a part of it as well. I personally take the course of personal responsibility, moral conscience, and sometimes social norms are what influence me in a much more powerful way than the fear of being punished.
