Socrates is intent on convincing his accusers that his service to his god (diamonion) is in the best interest of the city. in that sense, his piety is traditional. His personal divinity is also political: his god, working thorugh him, is trying to forge a philosophically motivated democracy out of a chaos of conflicting wills. BUT what reason has socrates given anyone for thinking that the philosophical life is politically relevant, let alone politically necessary?
