Question

1. The social exchange theory is something I have unknowingly taken apart of and been on the receiving end of as well. Through the assigned readings and my learning throughout the week, I have caught myself thinking of specific instances where this has taken place in my life. I have watched my parents circle slowly grow larger as they have become more successful. Friends have taken more interest in their life for the benefits of what they could potentially offer. I have also seen relationships in the workplace where people befriend the leadership team to get good letters of recommendation for other jobs, promotions and other benefits. Once they receive what they're looking for, the relationship slowly fades. In my own personal experience, I was once in a romantic relationship in which my partner continued to stay with me for awhile after they knew it wouldn't workout in the end, until they found someone else who could provide them with the emotional, mental, and financial support. This theory happens all around us, and if we are being honest, I bet we all have taken place in it. It is sad but I am glad we are bringing attention to this.

2. This was an interesting topic to learn about. I do believe that a lot of relationships fall into the social exchange theory. When looking at my relationship with my boyfriend, we are often putting in a lot of effort to make each others lives easier. If it is a night that he works, I will be sure to pack his lunch and clean the house so he can come home and relax the next morning instead of having tasks to do. He does the same for me. If I work, or need help around the house, he does not hesitate to help. Our relationship benefits one another in more than one way. While we do love each other and want to spend the rest of our lives with each other, I think it would be hard to have a good relationship if we both took out the effort to help one another to make each others lives easier.
