Refrigerant 134a is the working fluid in an organic Rankine cycle. Saturated vapor at 60°C enters the turbine, and the condenser operates at a pressure 600 kPa. Hot exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine are used to supply the heat input to this cycle. The exhaust gases enter the evaporator of the Rankine cycle at 300°C with a mass flow rate of 250 kg/h. It is important that the exhaust not allow the water in the air to condense in the tail pipe (causes rust). Assume all processes are ideal.

a. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines and including both isobars.

b. Determine the maximum amount of work that can be extracted from the Rankine power cycle (kW).

c. Now that you have solved this problem, describe why water/steam would never work for this type of application (look at the specific qin value).

d. Despite the limits of this type of system (i.e. low work output). Is there any drawback (besides financial) to installing one in a vehicle?
