Objective:
To find news or research useful in everyday life that is based on chemistry. One of the goals of this course is to show how chemistry is used in everyday life. In this exercise, you will be reading articles of interest to you (hopefully!) and analyzing the chemistry content.
Discussion:
Many news stories covered on TV, in newspapers or in magazines have to do with chemistry. Now that you are armed with some chemical knowledge, the content of those stories should be more understandable for you.
You may also search the Internet for informative articles, but you do need to know that anyone may post anything on the Internet.
It may or may not be accurate information. You should be careful in choosing your source. Most URL's ending in edu (education, mostly posted by colleges and universities) or .org (non-profit organizations) are fairly dependable (but not all!). If the URL ends in com, you need to look at the name of the company or person posting the information and use your judgement.
Procedure:
1. Locate and read a news story or article on a chemistry-related topic from a reputable source.
2. Write a one paragraph summary of the information (scientific content, hopefully chemistry related) contained in this news story or article, include bibliographic information (title, author, source, date, etc)
3. Locate and read a separate account of the same information (that is from a separate write-up in different newspapers, or in different magazines, one on the Internet, one in a newspaper, etc, but both on the same topic).
4. Write a one-paragraph summary of the information presented in the second source on the same topic as the first source, again include bibliographic information.
5. Write a third paragraph that compares and contrasts the information given from both sources (did both sources present the same data, in the same detail?, etc.).
6. Write a fourth paragraph of how this information can be useful to you and/or why you were interested in the topic.
7. Please note that this report should be typed and written at a. college level.
8. Your assignment will be turned in through Canvas. Go to Module 1, then to Lab #2 Report and upload your assignment.
