Should self-awareness encourage you to alter your behavior to accommodate external pressures, or should it empower you to become steadfast in your identity?
Self-awareness should both allow you to alter your behavior to accommodate external pressures and empower you to become steadfast in your identity
According to "Pathway to Happiness"(n.d.), "Having a clear understanding of your thought and, behavior patterns helps you understand other people. This ability to empathize facilitates better personal and professional relationships" (Self-Awareness). Self-awareness can allow you to meet the needs of stakeholders, customers, patients, etc. As you build relationships, barriers in maintain the relationship will arise and self-awareness will help communicate and adjust communications appropriately to your audience. Maintain the relationship and learning how the others may perceive you can help adjust actions, reactions, and communications in a positive and growth aspect. This is still empowerment in becoming who you are as a leader.
If people are likely to be biased or unfair in their assessment of you, how can you trust others to provide helpful criticism?
There is always going to be bias, when asking for feedback I try to ask it of people I trust in being completely honest with me in return. If I get feedback that I disagree with or that could be bias I still trust what they are saying because it is true from their perspective of me and I use the feedback in a way that allows me practice self-awareness, accept and adjust based on what I feel is in best interest for both learning and developing

Hi Class,
I believe that self-awareness should empower an individual to be steadfast in their identity but also give them the ability to adapt to their environment. No one should change who they are and what they stand for, but in the health care system, health professionals interact with a diverse population from different cultures, socioeconomic status, beliefs and backgrounds (ODPHP, 2018). Due to the diverse community in the health care system being aware of whom you are will allow you to feel confident in delivering a message, care or action to another audience without losing sight of your intended action but enabling you to alter your message toward the target. At my organization in my department Member Services, I deal with anything as simple as benefits to risk, compliance and grievance cases. In delivering unpleasant news or relevant information to an individual, you have to be confident in what you are providing if not you can lose control of the situation and potential loose trust of the patient. Unconscious bias in the health care system refers to a health care professional making an immediate assumption about a patient or colleague based on their appearance, race, gender, age or culture. Unconscious bias can become a real issue that can affect the individual''s care or professional working relations (Blair, Steiner & Havranek, 2011); This is where an individual''s self-awareness comes into play. You cannot control others thoughts and actions but you can control your own behavior. Different people have different perceptions but if you know you are doing your job to the best of your ability then consider the criticism that is delivered very carefully, but if you are self-aware, you can see what is true and what may be an unconscious bias. Ask questions or for the individual to elaborate on the criticism for you to see where they are coming from; Be true to who you are.

Self-awareness should be a practice we do every day when we leave our homes. We can let our hair down at home but outside of home it may be something different, maybe more conservative. External self-awareness is understanding how we are perceived and the impact we have on others (Friedman, Zuckerman, & Castro, 2018). Everyone is stereotyped based on how the look, act, dress, and skin color, so to keep a positive stereotype we should accommodate our behavior a little bit without losing our identity.
If people are likely to be biased or unfair in their assessment of you, how can you trust others to provide helpful criticism?
With helpful criticism I would consider who it is coming from because some criticism can be given with the intent to hurt your character or make you change your whole attitude and that may not be for the good. To have helpful criticism I would talk to those who are not biased and expect for them to tell me the truth as I would them. Also getting to know people is helpful whether you become friends or work associates to listen, watch, and see how they are as a person.

Self-awareness has been identified as a key component of authentic leadership (Ilies, Morgeson, & Nahrgang, 2005; Gardner et al., 2005). The concept of authenticity is rooted in being true to one's self. Another definition of Self-awareness by Goleman (1998) states that it is the five pillars of emotional intelligence (EI), a subject which has gained much academic traction in the last ten years. Goleman defined self-awareness as "the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others" (p. 88). Other definitions emphasize an "anticipation" aspect, where you can use your self-awareness to shape the perceptions and judgments of others (Taylor, 2010). I believe that self-awareness should empower you to become steadfast in your identity because it is rooted in being true to one self. I don't believe that people are likely to be biased or unfair in their assessment feedback and assessment in my opinion are necessary you cannot always go by your own understand, it's very help to get opinions of the people around you or the people you are working with I trust other to provide me with helpful criticism so I can know what areas I need to work on. The people that are assessing my work or behavior are doing so for my best interest with that in mind and even if they are I can still recognize what was said or told to me in the assessment for improvement. Being self-aware enables us to be more realistic about ourselves and our judgments and in turn, others trust and respect us
