Assignment:

Building on the central dogma of molecular biology DNA -------> RNA--------> Protein - we can understand genetic engineering and the notion of modifying Microbes to do things that are useful for humans (biotechnology). Genes are manipulated all the time in nature by viruses and these manipulations cause mutations. A great example to look back at is the Dutch in their selective breeding of carrots. Viruses helped make the mutations but humans selectively bred carrots to produce the orange ones we eat today. In the lab, when we perform site directed mutagenesis we are mutating specific regions of a microbes genome to insert information required to complete the task we want completed. Some people refer to these outcomes as GMO - genetically modified organisms.

1. How are microbes genetically altered in the lab so that they do things that are useful for people?

2. Should that process stop with medicines and industrial by-products or is the progression to GMO foods a natural course?

Fully explain with details, NOT JUST A FEW SENTENCES and cite sources.
