Question

John and Srivastava (1999) shared the personality traits as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness. Through research, there is evidence that these five traits are present in all people to some degree (Practical Psychology, 2019). After completing the Truity (2021) personality test, my highest rated trait is agreeableness. I understand agreeableness to be the ability to be patient with others, often putting other needs first and having a great deal of empathy (Practical Psychology, 2019). I placed very high in this category of the personality test and feel like that is a strength within my career but also is a challenge that I have to constantly keep tabs on. Having struggled with symptoms of burnout within the last two years, I believe this trait also makes me more vulnerable to countertransference. Collins (2018) describes countertransference takes place when the counsellor is triggered by the client's story and takes on the stress and emotions associated with that. Having to learn to work on my own self-care has been a journey that is now a priority in my counselling career. Moving forward, I have set boundaries in place for myself to ensure that I am constantly aware of my own emotions and reactions. Are there any of the traits that can be both a strength and a challenge for anybody else?
