Question

In the health sciences, there are several key research methodologies used to investigate clinical questions and improve patient care. These include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. Quantitative research focuses on collecting and analyzing numerical data. It is often used to measure variables and test hypotheses through statistical methods. Qualitative research, on the other hand, is used to explore people's experiences, perspectives, and behaviors (Tenny et al., 2022). It relies on data collected through interviews, focus groups, and observations rather than numbers. This type of research is helpful in understanding patient experiences and how healthcare services affect them on a personal level. Mixed methods research combines both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It allows researchers to analyze statistical data while also gaining deeper insight into the human aspects behind that data (Wasti et al., 2022). This approach is often used when a more comprehensive understanding of a problem is needed. In my future profession as a diagnostic medical sonographer, I would apply quantitative research to assess the effectiveness of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in identifying conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For example, I could design a prospective cohort study in which patients are scanned using POCUS and then compared to radiologist-confirmed.
