Question

Milosh is a patient who admits himself to the ER with sever abdominal pain and jaundice. Diagnostics eventually reveal he has a rare form of cancer, intrahepatic bile duct cancer. Milosh is referred to surgery to attempt to remove the cancer. His surgeon, Dr. Chingarande, is aware of an NIH study of intrahepatic bile duct cancer and asks Milosh if he'd be willing to enroll, which would involve travelling to the NIH for post-operative treatment and observation as well as the donation of tissue samples to the study. The NIH would cover travel expenses as well as treatment, but Milosh would not otherwise be compensated. Milosh expresses that he has no interest in participating because he dislikes travelling and believes he should be compensated if he is "giving parts of his body to scientists." Dr. Chingarande feels that Milosh has dismissed the idea too quickly, but is unsure whether it is appropriate to try and convince Milosh to reconsider.
