Farewell to Socrates. (The Second Statement of the Problem of the Republic) Glaucon thinks that Socrates in Book I has not been successful in trying to defeat Thrasymachus. But, in an obvious way, Thrasymachus was defeated. So apparently neither Socrates nor Thrasymachus was completely successful in Book I, as Glaucon says. Thrasymachus had argued that justice is the advantage of the strong and the advantage of another, and that injustice is the real virtue. Glaucon wants to “renew” the position of Thrasymachus. What needs to be fixed, and how do Glaucon’s arguments achieve that? It may be helpful to work backwards, first getting a grip on Book II and using that to help see what Plato is trying to do in Book I.
