The role and scope of a family nurse practitioner in Illinois is clearly defined in the State’s law. The law requires that all nurse practitioners work under delegated authority of physician. Whereas critics can argue this to have an impact on a nurse’s efficient service delivery, such sentiments should be subjected to pros and cons threshold of having such a law. That aside, the core mandate of a family nurse practitioner is generally similar to their counterparts in other states. Illinois may not give free reign to nurse practitioners but it certainly offer competitive packages compared to other states. In fact, Illinois’ collaborative practice agreements between practicing nurses and a physicians have been viewed by experts as among the most liberal in America. For instance, a physician does not need to be physically present for a nurse to do his/her job. All that is required is a written authority from a certified physician. This brings us to the discussion of the general scope and role of a family nurse practitioner.
