Question
Hodges, Walker, Baun, and Hawkins (2023) investigated the impact of school shootings on adolescent school safety using data from the 2009-2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The researchers analyzed the survey responses of 211,236 juveniles aged 14 to 18 from 24 school districts using a 2-way fixed-effects logistic regression model focusing on three indicators of school safety: intimidated by a weapon, carrying a gun at school, and avoiding school because of feeling unsafe, which accounted for 20% of the school population feeling this way. Marginally, only a few, if none, want to carry guns to schools due to the risk and consequences involved regardless of shooting in schools.
Also, the researchers emphasize that the trauma caused by school shootings extends beyond the immediate event and can impact teenage school safety. They suggest that healthcare providers should screen for the educational and psychosocial effects of school shootings, not only for students in the immediate vicinity but also for those attending neighboring schools or adjacent districts where shootings occur hence a need for further study that supports the implementation of policies that would reduce school shootings and gun-related violence.
Moreover, it is essential to note that the study has some limitations, such as the use of self-reported data, absenteeism from the survey, and the cross-sectional nature of the YRBS, which limits the ability to establish causality (Hodge et al., 2023). They also noted that the findings may only be generalizable to some high school students, as the study included a limited number of school districts. Nonetheless, the research highlights the importance of addressing the long-term effects of school shootings and implementing measures to enhance school safety and support adolescents affected by such events.
