School counselors regularly interact with students and family members affected by substance use. Therefore, it is important to identify the effects of substance use, and the role school counselors play when interacting with students affected by substance use.
Make a tri-fold pamphlet for teachers to use as a resource about the effects of substance use experienced by family members and students. You may include small file images and graphics to add visual appeal. Organize your content on both sides of the tri-fold pamphlet.
Include the following in your pamphlet resource:
- How to identify substance use in students, and some of the markers of living with substance use.
- Signs and symptoms that indicate substance use in students.
- Signs and symptoms that indicate substance use within the family.
- Effects substance use has on students' behavior, social-emotional development, and academic performance.
- Effects substance use has on the family dynamics.
- The school counselor's role when working with families, PK-12 or postsecondary personnel, and community agencies when dealing with substance use.
- Interventions, programs, and resources available within the school and community that teachers can provide to students and family members affected by substance use.
