Scenario

You work as a support worker for an organisation that provides services that support people in the local community.  Najla is a 24-year-old woman who has suffered a recent spinal injury requiring permanent use of a wheelchair. She is currently unemployed and on Jobseeker allowance. She is living in a small flat that is not suitable for her needs and she has no carer. Her family want her to move in with them so they can care for her, but Najla sees this as a backward step for her. While this is upsetting for the family, they say they would support it if it were possible, but they do not believe it is and have not investigated further. She wants to be independent but does not know how to achieve this. She has come to you for assistance. Her parents are not with her but are willing to discuss the issues with you.

2. Najla has some risk issues to consider when formulating a case plan. What would be your duty of care and dignity of risk considerations when collaborating in Najla's situation?
3. A holistic approach can support recovery, which includes referrals to specialist supports. What referrals would you make regarding Najla's case?
4. It is important that a review is conducted in collaboration with the client to see what resources and supports the client already has. Supports and resources may not always be positive. Identify any issues or concerns that Najla may face. Are there any issues requiring mediation? If so, how will you address them
5. What impact will disempowerment have on Najla if nothing is done to address her needs?
6. If there are relationship issues, what strategies of negotiation and conflict resolution would you use with the client to collaborate for a positive outcome?
