Consider the roles of women in colonial and early national America. What restrictions were they placed under and what freedoms did they enjoy? Give specific examples, not just generalizations. Did the act of writing poetry, captivity narratives and/or travel narratives step across cultural boundaries imposed by the patriarchal social structure? Or were some of the actions in the women's texts transgressive (even when involuntary) such as being captured by Native Americans, publishing their work, or traveling alone, cross-country, on business?

Specifically consider Anne Bradstreet, Mary Rowlandson, Phillis Wheatley and Sarah Kemble Knight's poems and narratives. Use at least six quotations including at least one from each of the four authors themes lives (that is, their own writing or poetry).
