Question
We've studied how time-keeping systems and conventions, like the calendar, the schedule, and the clock, played a key role consolidating Western time-sensibility. We've talked about how these systems help us organize as a society (holidays, weekends, appointments, etc.) but also how they affect the ways we, subjectively, feel time. We've also talked about how these time-keeping tools are essential for Christianity-and we studied briefly how they differ from other religions' time-orientations-but also for the development of industrial capitalism in modern Europe. In the 21st century, many of these time-keeping devices are still relevant (we're still slaves to clocks, calendars, and schedules), but other technological inventions have appeared, like the internet or smartphones.
