Mental Health and the Community
Assessment: Case Study Research Report
Your primary objective is to view this assessment from the perspective of mental health issues and critically identify and examine their intersection with the various complex needs of these vulnerable clients.
CASE STUDY:
You are a Mental Health Support Worker for Wungening Aboriginal Corporation in their Wungening Moort program, a culturally secure, responsive and practical service that aims to assist Aboriginal families to keep their children safely at home with loving family, community and culture.
You have been allocated a family consisting of a mother (Renae), her daughter (Kayla), and her son (Tyson). The family has recently relocated from a remote community to Perth after Renae's grandmother, who had been their primary source of housing and support, passed away. With no immediate family nearby, they struggled to find stable housing and spent several months living in overcrowded conditions with distant relatives. You have now assisted them to move into transitional accommodation through the organisation's Wooree Miya Women's Refuge, and your role is to support them to access services to meet their complex needs. Renae (29 years old) is a survivor of domestic violence from her former partner and is in recovery from alcohol addiction. She reports being sober for the past six months but says cravings and stress still affect her daily life. The violence she experienced has left her with high levels of anxiety, poor sleep, and recurring nightmares. She carries guilt for the impact this has had on her children and is wary of discussing her ex-partner due to stigma and shame. Since moving away from her community, she has also felt deeply disconnected from culture and family. Renae has been referred by her GP for further assessment and support, as she may be experiencing Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) along with symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Kayla (12 years old) has been struggling with bullying at her new school, which has contributed to low self-esteem and withdrawal from friends. Teachers have reported that she appears tired in class and finds it hard to focus. Renae has also noticed that Kayla has begun skipping meals and making negative comments about her body, raising concerns about emerging body image issues.
Tyson (8 years old) has shown significant separation anxiety since relocating to Perth. He often refuses to attend school, clings to his mother, and becomes distressed when routines change. Loud environments cause him to become overwhelmed, and he sometimes lashes out aggressively when frustrated. Renae is worried he may have underlying anxiety or developmental challenges and would like an assessment to better understand his needs.
All three family members present as stressed, tired, and undernourished.
This research assignment has three parts:
Part 1 - Read the case study and conduct research to discuss the following:
How does Colonisation impact Indigenous Australians (including the Stolen Generation)?
Why is it important to understand Indigenous Australian culture when working with consumers?
What are the risk and protective factors for Aboriginal mental health?
Part 2 - Evidence-based supports and interventions
Apply critical thinking and judgement in identifying appropriate help and supports suitable for all of Renae, Kayla and Tyson's complex needs.
Name the supports and interventions that you will use and explain your choices using suitable research evidence.
Part 3 - Critical self-reflection
It has now been one month since you first met your clients.
You are expected to engage in personal critical self-reflection (not just general reflection). You must evaluate your own decisions that you have made as a Support Worker including the therapies, interventions and organisation/s (if any) you chose to support your clients' needs using suitable research (as well as mental health policy and other evidence) to show how and why you made these decisions.
Research requirements
ALL parts of your report must include in-text citations to support arguments with full details provided in the end references of a MINIMUM of 6 recent (published in the last 10 years or so) and relevant (your evidence MUST be clearly related to your discussion points) academic peer-reviewed reviewed journal articles. This minimum does NOT include any textbook references and/or government reports cited.
Formatting requirements
Ensure your report includes (ALL) a Cover Sheet, Contents page, Introduction, Body, Conclusion and APA 7 References list (both in-text citations and end reference list) and follows BCS Formatting Guidelines (see "Assessments" tab).
