2) If you are still having troubles nailing down a current health policy topic, think about the top 8 national practice problems. Of the known national practice problems-obesity; diabetes; heart disease; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (or COPD); mental illness; cancer; addiction: alcohol, opioid; and patient safety regarding falls, pressure ulcers, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and medication errors-what is the real impact on your community?

Have you visited the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ, 2018) website? There is a section on the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports (NHQDR) that will allow you to search from a state level.

It may lead to some startling findings and some potential areas to review within your facility to compare to potential practice problems later in the program. For instance, I searched Arizona and reviewed the snapshot of the state. Mental health and substance abuse benchmarks were shocking! We have some work to do as a state! The same with patient safety! This data could easily be linked to one of the big 8 national problems and of concern at your clinical site.
