Question - Review the PSI examples provided in the course content (you can follow this link to them: Presentence Investigations-PSI Examples. Note that they contain details about family structure, employment history, and residence situation in addition to offense details. All of these examples are real documents prepared and delivered to a sentencing judge - all names, dates, personal identifiers, addresses, etc. have been changed - while leaving the facts and circumstances intact.
The widespread, prolific use of probated sentences is a hotly debated topic between those who would rather see offenders punished and imprisoned for lengthy periods, even for what would be considered lower-level offenses. In the State of Georgia specifically, it costs about an average of $21k per year to house a prisoner, broken down to approximately $56 per day. Comparatively, it costs between $1.60 and $2.60 per day to supervise offenders in the community. These financial savings can be utilized to fund programming aimed at reducing recidivism and providing offenders with the tools they need to become successful, law-abiding, productive (tax-paying) citizens. The use of community supervision, such as probation and parole require some empirical means of ascertaining which offenders represent an acceptable "risk" for being under supervision instead of incarcerated. One piece of this analysis is the Pre-sentence Investigation or also known as the PSI. Included in this module are several PSI examples.
Choose two of these PSI documents and your own recommendation for sentencing for both cases in separate paragraphs - justify your position. Try to do so without interjecting emotion - make it business-like and factual to get your message across to the court. Consider apparent stability/instability at home, proper formative guidance, employment history, etc. - where available.
