Chapter 8 and Losoncz and Tyson (2007)

Discuss Braithwaite's concept of reintegrative shaming. This conceptualization of shame centers on the emotions felt when standards established by familial or social institutions fail to be met. In many societies around the world shame is a powerful tool of social control, however in the United States the process of informal shaming is often absent. Due to the fact that informal methods of social control are often more effective than legal sanctions in curbing deviant behavior, discuss the concept of reintegrative shaming and how it might be used in a more formal legal system such as that found within the U.S.
