The laundry detergent advertisement put forward by Chinese firm Qiaobi last year 2016, depicts a light-skinned Chinese woman throwing a black man covered in paint, head first into a washing machine after a bit of flirting. After undergoing a wash, the man emerges as a light-skinned Asian. The scene: a young Chinese woman is doing her laundry. In walks a black man, with some paint stains on his face. They look at each other suggestively. She puts a tab of detergent into his mouth... and then shoves him into the washing machine, the man emerges a fair-skinned Chinese man and the lady becomes apparently delighted by this development.
The Chinese firm later apologised for its advert which provoked a storm of allegations of racism saying "We express our apology for the harm caused to the African people because of the spread of the ad and the over-amplification by the media," it said. "We sincerely hope the public and the media will not over-read it."
An overwhelming number of commenters on the firms website expressed disappointment with Qiaobi, both for the commercial and for its apology with many commenters outraged by the ad's racial bias.
If I were running this ad campaign, I would have simply shown any man or woman, after a hard day at work or outdoor sporting experience, pass on his/her clothes for a super wash experience with the new laundry detergent. Simple and quite sufficient to get the message across!
