Question: Research the gunshot wounds reporting statute in your state. In your chosen healthcare career, would you be a mandated reporter? Why or why not?
Initial Post - In regards to the state of California law, any physician, nurse, or employee of a hospital, clinic, or nursing home is a mandated reporter that is knowingly treating a person suffering from a gunshot wound or life threatening injury that indicates an act of violence. This is regardless of whether the act was inflicted by his or her own self or by another person. The report should be made to the local law enforcement immediately which will then be followed by a written report. This is important so that law enforcement may interfere and investigate to eliminate any concern of criminal activity. This ensures the safety of the public. This also contributed to the gathering of information on gun related incidents to improve public health and policy making. In my current position, I am a healthcare administrator. It is very unlikely I would be the first person to be in the room or have examined any one who might have a suspected gunshot wound. However, if that was the case, I would be obligated to share the details with an immediate healthcare professional and have them contact the authorities. There may be more harm in not reporting a situation that may have included a firearm.
