Although mandatory retirement laws have been abolished in the United States, the issue remains controversial; other countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom, have not necessarily followed suit. A Canadian poll shows that more Canadians than ever before are opposed to mandatory retirement, but that number represents only about a third of the population. Many younger workers feel that opportunities for their own career advancement are more limited today than in the past because older workers are less willing to "step aside". Therefore, compulsory retirement remains a fact of life in these countries.

In support of the resolution is evidence from studies of cognitive decline and reduced processing resources in older adults. The opposite position will find research evidence pointing to the flawed nature of cross-sectional studies of age-related deficits, the age bias inherent in traditional research designs, and evidence that practical intelligence and problem-solving skills remain stable or improve during adulthood.
