Context

Choosing and justifying an appropriate methodology to investigate a topic is one of the key tasks of a researcher. When working on this assessment, proceed with your approved research topics.

This assessment is the first part in a series on Research Design. Together with assessment 2, they form the foundation for the full Research Design and assist you in developing the third chapter of your thesis (see the diagram below).

Develop Research Plan

Deliver a 3-minute in-class presentation supported by script and 1 PPT slide that introduces your proposed methodology choice and rationale. This assessment will inform your research design submission in Assessment 2.

Instructions

Your presentation and supporting slide should address the requirements listed above. To assist with development, you need to address the following:

Project type and scope

Critically engage with your research project to delineate its nature and scope

Specify the stage of knowledge development, and the geographic boundaries of the project

Research approach, philosophy, and strategy

Critically examine alternative research approaches, philosophies, and strategies, noting their limitations

Explore key empirical research relevant to your topic, and note methodological differences

Ethical principles

Identify the relevant ethical principles to be considered for your project

Defend, recommend, and outline how you will implement these considerations

Data analysis, and interpretation

Consider how you will analyse and interpret the data

Justify why those strategies fit with your selected method and project

Methodology alignment and rationale

Summarise into a well-argued rationale that supports the chosen methodology

Demonstrate why this methodology was selected over alternatives

Oral Presentation

Your facilitator will schedule the in-class oral presentations. As the facilitator will strictly enforce timing, it is recommended that you rehearse the timing carefully; at three minutes you will be stopped, and you will only be allowed to show one slide.
