Developing the Research Proposal

Assessment - Minute presentation with script

Learning Outcome 1 : Clearly define and discuss the role of emergent propositions, concept modelling, and frameworks in evidence-based research.

Learning Outcome 2: Build a framework for analysis for a chosen research project statement.

Assessment Task
Assessment 2 requires you to present your theoretical framework during an in class oral presentation showcasing your developed theoretical model. You are required to support this with a maximum 1000-word script in PPT notes. You are required to clearly identify and discuss the key concepts for research; evaluate and explain theoretical assumptions of the research study and how it relates to the broader fields of knowledge within your area of your area of interest; and justify the appropriateness of the theoretical framework in context of intended outcome. You are required to identify the variables and construct areas for investigation. You will upload your slide deck with notes as your submission.

Context
A theoretical framework consists of concepts and constructs, together with their definitions, and existing theory/theories that are used for your particular study. The theoretical framework is not something that is found readily available in the literature. You may find a framework that becomes the basis for your investigation in a given context or you may be required to build your own framework based on numerous theoretical inputs.

Developing a theoretical framework strengthens your research study by enabling the critical evaluation of theoretical assumptions against an explicit positioning statement. This theoretical framework forms the basis of the hypothesis and choice of research methods that you will apply towards finding a solution to your research problem. Articulating the theoretical assumptions of a research study forces you to address questions of why and how. It permits you to move from simply describing a phenomenon observed to generalizing about various aspects of that phenomenon.

Having a theory helps you to identify the limits to those generalizations. A theoretical framework specifies which key variables influence a phenomenon of interest. It alerts you to examine how those key variables might differ and under what circumstances.

In order to develop a theoretical framework, you will review pertinent research literature for theories and analytic models that are relevant to the research problem you are investigating. The selection of a theory should depend on its appropriateness, ease of application, and explanatory power.

Instructions

Part 1: Theoretical Framework

Build your theoretical framework, following the three essential steps below:
Identify your key concepts and constructs: The first step is to pick out the key terms from your problem statement. Concepts often have multiple definitions, so the theoretical framework involves clearly defining what you mean by each term. Key constructs are the building blocks of any theory. They are the elements in the theory and are theoretical representations of the concepts. Get top-notch online assignment help now.

Evaluate and explain relevant theories: By conducting a thorough literature review, you can determine how other researchers have defined and drawn connections between these key concepts. After discussing different models and theories, you establish the definitions that best fit your research and justify why this is the case.

Contextualise your theoretical framework: A theoretical framework discussed various theories from other authors, and demonstrates how these theories will be modified and contextualised to the research problem that you identified in your previous assessment, incorporating any feedback received.

You may want to use the following as a guide for formulating your own discussion: Research Context
Introduce the following:
The research background;
The research problem;
Context, scope of the study;
Literature Review

Discuss the following:
Present the literature related to the problem (you can draw from the previous assessment).

Emphasise the underpinning theories that have been applied by prior works in the problem area. Specifically mention the theories that you will be using in your own framework, highlight its application or lack thereof in the existing literature.

Theoretical framework
Discuss the following:
Describe your theoretical framework, contextualising to the concepts that you will be using in your research.

What justification is used for this theoretical framework?

Summary
Begin closing the loop by:
Aligning the problem to the proposed theoretical framework.
Present the preliminary research questions and hypothesis/propositions that emerge from this alignment exercise.

Part 2: Oral Presentation of your Theoretical Model

This part of the assessment will involve presenting or recording an oral presentation that briefly discusses the theoretical framework that you have developed for this assessment. Your facilitator will schedule in class oral presentations (3 minutes) of your theoretical model. Your presentation will include 1-2 visual slides, developed with MS PowerPoint, MS Word or similar, and must include a professional and cohesive articulation of your findings, explaining your model to the class. Please rehearse the timing of your presentation and prepare adequately. This process is aligned with the 3MT pitch process and supports you learnings for succinct clear research presentations.

Referencing
It is essential that you use appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research.
