External Reporting Issues ASSESSMENT: TUTORIAL ASSESSMENT

This assessment item assesses the following learning outcomes:

Critically investigate real world business issues and problems drawing on analysis, evaluation and synthesis of discipline knowledge, including theory and practice.
Use information literacy skills and communicate effectively and professionally in written forms and using media appropriate for diverse purposes, contexts and audiences.
Use information literacy skills, and communicate effectively and professionally in oral forms, appropriate for diverse purposes and contexts.

1. Debate -

Purpose: Debates can be an effective method of enabling students to take an active part in their own learning through the preparation and presentation of their own work and that of their peers. This supports pedagogic theory which proposes that students learn effectively when they learn cooperatively, through interaction with others, and when they develop critical thinking.

Debate topics - Government departments are sufficiently different from private sector entities to warrant a different accounting system and Conceptual Framework.

The debate consists of two opposing sides (affirmative/negative) of the debate topic:

1. The affirmative view (for) agrees with the debate topic. This view will involve the student arguing the benefits of the topic and then subsequently rebutting the arguments of the negative (against) view.

2. The negative view (against) disagrees with the debate topic: This view will involve the student arguing against the main theme of the topic and also subsequently rebutting the arguments of the affirmative speaker.

To participate in the debate students will need to:

1. research information relevant to the debate topic

2. analyse their researched materials to build up affirmative or negative view arguments

3. demonstrate their ability to integrate knowledge into their view of the debate topic

4. consider the views of the opposing side and be prepared to rebut these views

2. Critical analysis

Critical analysis: over the course of the semester students will be required to submit four short written pieces analysing an external reporting issue related to a specific ASX-listed company. The best three critical analyses will count towards the final mark. Each piece should be approximately 300 words.

400 Words Debate, 200 Words reply to other student and 200 words script for presentation in class. AYN 415_External reporting issues as Master course. Debate: I and other partner have a same topic. I is "For" of that topic and other partner is "Against" of that topic. So step 1) I need to finish my part until this this Sunday. - for 5 min (So you need to finish my part until this Sunday please) step 2) My partner will provide his part for me until this Sunday (After getting his part, I will provide that one to you) step 3) I need to prepare to oppose his opinions - for 3 min and to focus and to argue more my part including conclusion (You need to read and check his part and need to make my part more until next Tuesday).
