Research Design
Purpose:
The purpose of the Research Design assignment is for you to demonstrate mastery of the concepts covered in the course.
General instructions:
For this assignment, you will indicate the research method you think best fits the client's question and will then provide the details of a hypothetical study.
The study you design should directly address the client's request and should contribute to the literature on this topic. The design cannot be a replication of one of the studies included in the sources collected by your team; however, it could be based on what the authors of those studies suggested for future research.
The Research Design assignment is an individual, not a team, assignment. You may discuss the Research Design assignment with anyone in this course; however, you must write your responses in your own words. In the event that two or more students have very high match rates in turnitnin, those students will meet with Dr. Spencer and deductions are likely to be taken.
Client's information:
Owa Zing, PA
Following the decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove a frequently prescribed anti-inflammatory drug from the market and concerns over prescription pain medications, Mr. Zing noticed that many of his patients appear reluctant to take medication to manage their pain. More and more patients are asking about approaches to pain management that complement or replace medication. Mr. Zing is considering hiring a health psychologist who could provide these treatment options within his practice.
Request: Make a recommendation as to whether Mr. Zing should add a health psychologist to his treatment team based on evidence-based approaches a health psychologist could deliver to significantly reduce pain and improve the quality of life of pain patients.
Research Methods
Research Design
Type your responses in the open space below each question. Expand the space as needed for the length of your response. Answer all questions based on the method/design you choose for question 1.
1. Research Design
A. Of the research methods/designs discussed this semester, which do you believe would be the best method/design to answer your client's question, and why?
B. Based on the research design you chose, indicate if the variables used in this studyare predictor OR independent variables. Explain why the variable(s) fit the type(s) you chose.
2. Participant information.
A. How many participants would you include in this study? Why did you choose this number?
B. Which sampling method would you use and why?
C. Describe how you would sample participants using the method you chose for 2B. Provide enough detail for another person to replicate your sampling method.
D. Describe the characteristics of the participants in your study. In other words, list the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
3. Manipulated Variables
A. Identify the variable(s) that you would manipulate in this study. If you would not manipulate variable(s), explain why not.
B. If your study includes a manipulated variable (and/or is a factorial design with a measured IV), identify and describe the levels of the IV(s). The descriptions of the levels must include enough detail for another person to replicate.
4. Measured Variables
Identify the variable(s) you would measure, indicate the way in which you would measure the variable(s), and explain why you chose the method(s) of measurement. Please address each variable separately.
5. Illustrations
Respond to A,B, or C based on your answer to question 1.
A. If you chose a bivariate design, include the hypothetical r value and draw the corresponding scatterplot (be sure to fully label the figure). Then suggest a moderator and a mediator AND provide an illustration of each (see page 263).
B. If you chose a multivariate design, include hypothetical beta values. Then suggest a moderator and a mediator AND provide an illustration of each (see page 263).
C. If you chose aquasi-experimental or experimental design (simple or factorial), provide an illustration of the design you have chosen (see illustrations in chapters 10 and 12). Include the number of participants in each cell. Then create a graph of the hypothesized results. If you chose a factorial design, you must also include a means table with marginal means.
6. Results
Write a paragraph to describe the results (in words; not numbers) illustrated in your response to question 5.
7. Validity
Based on the method you chose and the study you designed, identify two types of validity (of the four types outlined in chapter 3) and explain the specific threats you are concerned about for each.
8. Ethics
Identify and describe the APA ethical principles that are especially relevant to your study, and explain why those principles are relevant to your study.
