Learning objectives and attributes - On successful completion of the unit you should:

1. understand marine and estuarine ecosystems and associated organisms on a local, regional and global scale

2. be able to describe key marine and estuarine ecosystem processes using relevant examples

4. be able to evaluate the impacts of changing global climate and environmental conditions on the marine environment

5. be able to prepare and write a significant scientific report

6. be able to design experiments, analyse information and evolve appropriate hypotheses using experimental field data and published material

7. be able to design and undertake advanced statistical analysis of field data and present the results in an appropriate format

8. be able to work in the field and laboratory with others and to operate in a team environment

Assessment details - Assessment comprises the following:

A report on the fishing exercise conducted during the field camp, using class results. Details of what is required for this report will be explained during the field camp.

A detailed field report, presenting results and analysis of the major field project, carried out during the field camp. There will be an opportunity to submit a draft of the report for feedback prior to assessment. The report should be written in accordance with the Instructions to Authors, to be found in the back of the Field Guide. The marking schedule for this report can also be found in the back of the Field Guide.

Participation in discussions in one tutorial; some preparatory reading is expected to participate effectively. A choice of three tutorials will be available on a first come-first serve basis; attendance is only required at one tutorial class, although students are welcome to attend any or all classes.

A 2-hour theory examination during the timetabled assessment period.
