Part -1:

Students are to select one of the following topics and write a 1000 word essay.

A) The Australian Hospitality Industry - Importance and challenges.

B) The Australian Tourism Industry - Importance and challenges.

Part -2:

Description:

Students are required to write and present a report based on an organisation in the hospitality or tourism industry (hotels, travel industry, travel agents, events etc). The report has a 2,000 word requirement (not including appendices, charts or tables) and a presentation of between 10-15 minutes duration. Students will be required to describe the particular business and its operations, as well as industry challenges and opportunities it faces. Research should focus on academic journals, websites and textbooks. Newspapers or magazine articles may also be used if deemed suitable for the purpose of this assessment - if unsure please check with your lecturer.

The report should cover the following points:

· The particular sector to which the chosen organisation belongs and the position of that sector in the overall Hospitality / Tourism industry.

· The products, services and facilities it has to offer and its capacities.

· The organisation's target market and how it reaches its chosen target market.

· The attributes and qualifications that staff are required to possess.

· Legal compliance issues for the organisation.

· Sustainability issues of environmental, ethical and social responsibility (Triple Bottom Line).

· Trends in the industry. You are required to consider past, present and future trends of the industry and how it would relate to your chosen organisation.

· What are the contemporary issues that are influencing the direction of the industry? And what are the future challenges for the industry.

Part -3:

Description: Present your findings from the group report in class during lecture and tutorial time with the use of Power point and other appropriate audio/visual support.

Part -4:

Description: The final examination represents 50% of the marks for the subject. The exam will be closed book covering all material from lectures, the textbook, group discussions, as well as the application of theoretical knowledge. The final examination may include multiple choice questions, short answer questions and a compulsory section.
