Assumption of the Virgin (1516-1518).

During the baroque period, many artists created styles and techniques that were distinct from those of their Renaissance forefathers. The majority of the artists used bright colors and embellishments in their paintings. This was a period in which Italy, in particular, bolstered not only its religion but also other sectors such as politics and art. The fundamental subject of this period was expansion, which was reflected in the artwork produced at the time. Artists considered motion and space, as well as the use of dramatic lighting and the concept of time.

The miraculous elevation of Mary, Jesus' mother, into heaven is shown in the Assumption of the Virgin oil painting, which is painted in bright, contrasting hues. The apostles reach up towards Mary's figure as it is lifted up by celestial angels amidst the clouds, bidding her farewell on the ground below. From the golden light of heaven, an older man representation of God glances down at Mary, as an angel beside him brings a crown to present to Mary.
