Assignment:

In the short essay, "Health, Ecology and the Microbiome," we are introduced to 3 different conceptions of the relationship between a person and their microbiome. The authors consider the question of whether one's microbiome is the type of thing to which health can be correctly attributed. Their answer is that it depends on which of the three conceptions of the microbiome is under consideration, and also on how we interpret the notion of health. Explain why. Why, that is, do the different conceptions of the microbiome and the different notions of health lead to different answers when we ask whether a microbiome is the type of thing that can be healthy or unhealthy? Finally, say whether any of the conceptions of health and the microbiome might allow us to characterize broader systems, such as our campus community, a wetland, or the United States, as healthy or unhealthy, and explain why.
