Exercise 1: What is ''Asia''? Regional Membership and Variable Geography

As introduced in the assigned readings, "there is a great deal of confusion over what constitutes ‘Asia,' the ‘Asia-Pacific' and the ‘Pacific' (p. 3). After reading the introductory chapter and conducting your independent research, consider the differences between the following three concepts.
• The Asia-Pacific
• East Asia
• Northeast Asia
Answer the following questions in a justified manner. The four questions must be answered individually. Answers must be clearly identified; do not write a single text.

Exercise 2: Think Piece
After doing the mandatory readings for this unit, think of one case that could serve to illustrate the topic of " the Legacy of the Cold War in East Asia " and write a short piece (maximum 400 words) covering the following aspects:
• Why is it generally affirmed that the legacy of the Cold War is still very palpable in East Asia today?
• Illustrate your answer with the case or example that you have thought of (e.g. Taiwan, the Korean War...).
• What consequences did the episode/case that you have selected in the post-Cold War context?
• How is that case still relevant today?

Attention: Justify your answers. You are expected to demonstrate that you have done the readings and have conducted independent research. Do not forget to provide correct citations for all sources of information used for the elaboration of your exercise. Direct quotes must be properly indicated. You must provide a citation every time you borrow an idea or some information from another author or source (regardless of whether it is a direct quotation). Failing to do so is considered plagiarism!

Answers must be given within the indicated word limits. Answers extending beyond the word limits will not be counted. Your ability to synthesize information will be positively evaluated.
