Question: This week I decided to watch one of my old favorites, The Breakfast Club (1985). This movie relates to this week's readings in the way that it's one of the most "popular and enduring teen comedies of the era" (Lewis 375). This movie and others like it, as described by Lewis, reflects a "formula profoundly suited to the white, suburban teen experience in which (for his audience) relatable outcasts from the clique-based world of high school quietly discover the simple and important life lesson, 'Be Yourself'" (Lewis 375-76). This is prevalent in the 'group therapy' scene where the group of teens opens up about their personal struggles. It shows that even the most different and unlikely groups can find that they have a lot more in common than they think. I also like how each teen in this group represents a different clique in high school.
I think this definitely spoke to many 'outcast' white teens in the 80s. That being said, I do think that my source succeeded in conveying the agenda it set out to cover because it shows how no teenager is really going through it alone and that people you never would expect to understand actually do. I can easily connect the themes in this movie to those in High School Musical (2006). Obviously, The Breakfast Club isn't a musical, but both of these movies explore themes of belonging and they both speak to the suburban teen experience. They both show how people who are completely different can come together and find commonalities and friendships.
These two movies also reflect the idea that "the pursuit of happiness involves overcoming baffled, useless parents and teachers and fellow teenagers who are hung up on status and good looks" (Lewis 375). There's even a great song in High School Musical called 'Status Quo' that embodies this idea perfectly.
