Assignment -
Psychology Today (2019) defines emotional intelligence as 'the ability to identify and manage one's own emotions, as well as the emotions of others." There are three facets to this EI:
- emotional awareness - ability to identify/name own emotions.
- emotional ability - harness those emotions to apply them to tasks/problem solving.
- emotional management - regulating own emotions; helping others with their emotions.
However, it is important to note that emotional intelligence has nothing to do with your personality. These are considered personality traits (Mayer. 2009). Instead, emotional intelligence has everything to do with how you recognize, apply, and manage emotions in yourself and others. Check out this chart to see what these categories look like in action: Emotional Intelligence Domain and Competencies.
Next watch video where Dr. David Goleman explains emotional intelligence further to help you with your reflection.
Finally, read this short articled on Dr. Goleman's experience with the importance of focus for emotional intelligence and apply this to your reflection.
Activity Details - Reflect on your own emotional intelligence
Go to the UC Berkeley test on emotional intelligence and nonverbals. Answer honestly on what you see in the pictures (there are 20). After you have completed the test, review your results. Did anything surprise you? Were some questions tougher than others?
Citing what you have learned from the materials here, reflect on your own emotional intelligence. What are some of the things you know you need to work on and what are your strengths? How do these things impact your relationships? Give examples, when necessary.
