1. Using only the course materials (i.e., not personal experience, personal views, or outside sources), contrast left-wing and right-wing terrorism in the United States. In your response provide three specific ways in which these groups (in general) have differed historically and/or currently. Be sure to include specific examples of groups and/or events to illustrate your understanding of these general differences. In the final portion of your response indicate how left-wing and right-wing terrorist groups in the United States have primarily employed the process of dehumanization described in Horgan's discussion of engagement in terrorist violence (e.g., to dehumanize targets of their violence how have these groups categorized their targets in order to reduce feelings of guilt or responsibility?). In your response, be sure to employ the specific terms and constructs outlined in our course materials.
2. In his discussion on engagement in terrorist activity, Horgan describes four specific stages in the cycle of a terrorist event. Using a specific example of an international or domestic terrorist event provided in Gus Martin's text, apply one of the four stages to the terrorist event. In your response provide a brief summary of the specific event, a brief summary of the stage that you have chosen, and then apply the stage to the event (i.e., describe the terrorist event in light of the information provided by Martin and the manner in which Horgan argues the stage takes place in the cycle of a terrorist event). Be sure to focus your discussion of the terrorist event in such a way that it highlights your understanding of the stage of the cycle of a terrorist event that you have chosen. In your response, be sure to employ the specific terms and constructs outlined in our course materials.
3. Religious ideology is arguably one of the prominent components of many terrorist groups and events. Our readings provided a wide range of examples of groups and events that are or were ostensibly related to religious ideologies. Using only the information provided in our course material provide an analysis of how religious ideologies are potential factors related to each of Horgan's IED arc of terrorism. In your response, provide a brief summary of each component of the IED arc of terrorism and then clearly indicate how religious ideology (in general) can impact the components (i.e., how does religious ideology impact involvement/engagement/disengagement in terrorist activity?). While your discussion should focus on religious ideology in general, you may employ specific examples of religious ideologies to illustrate your point (though examples are not required). Again, your discussion should be based only on the course materials and not your personal experiences, personal viewpoints, or any outside sources. In your response, be sure to employ the specific terms and constructs outlined in our course materials.
